University of Massachusetts at Amherst: Computer Science Laboratories Building
This 94,300-GSF addition to UMass Amherst’s Computer Science Building answers the university’s call for a flexible, environmentally responsible space for its top-ranked, rapidly growing computer science and artificial intelligence programs. Adding a 240-seat lecture hall, classrooms, robotics labs, offices, and a makerspace to the north end of campus, the new Computer Science Laboratories (CSL) Building also introduces an expansive, light-filled commons. Flexible seating along circulation routes, in lounges, and in classroom labs support student and faculty collaboration and social connections.
The design of the CSL Building embraces UMass Amherst’s Carbon Zero initiative, which aims to transition the campus to 100% renewable energy by 2032. The mass timber structure—glulam columns and beams with cross-laminated timber decks—reduces embodied carbon as compared to steel-and-concrete construction. Selection of low-emitting and environmentally friendly building materials, as well as an emphasis on the reduction of indoor and outdoor water use, also supports the university’s climate resiliency and health goals.
The CSL Building is the first building on campus to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
