DTE Energy: Lumen at Beacon Park
Lumen at Beacon Park stands next to a sidewalk like a carefully folded piece of origami—albeit out of glass and wood, not paper. Designed by Touloukian Touloukian, Inc., the 8,875-SF restaurant anchors a new public green space, its cantilevered green roofs gesturing simultaneously toward the historic Detroit G.A.R. building across Grand River Avenue and the elliptical lawn of Beacon Park.
Sapele mahogany wood, metal panels, precast concrete, and a flexible glass storefront combine to create a sleek yet welcoming façade. Folding glass walls dissolve the boundary between the exterior and interior, connecting the restaurant more directly with its surroundings. At the ceiling, a system of wood louvers and acoustic fabric panels hide the mechanics of downlights, sprinklers, and the sound system. The warm tones of the wood-wrapped cantilever balance the sharp edges of the roof deck.
This project achieved LEED Silver certification.
